About Dr Ziphozonke Mkhize

Dr Ziphozonke Mkhize is the first resident Urologist to join Melomed Richards Bay since its inception in 2017.

As a Urologist, Dr Mkhize treats male, female and paediatric patients for urinary conditions, including conditions affecting the kidneys, ureter, bladder, prostate and urethra. He also assists his male patients with their sexual and reproductive systems and assists men in dealing with conditions like erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation and infertility.

Dr Mkhize completed his undergraduate training at UKZN in 2007 before he moved on to train as a medical intern at Ladysmith Provincial Hospital. This training inspired his ambition to become a Urologist.

‘I was fortunate enough to be the intern assigned to Dr Nkosi (also a Urologist), which meant that I would shadow him while seeing patients. I realised how many patients needed a Urologist and how rare Urologists were. The seed was planted, and from then on, I was motivated to make a difference.’ He says.

He worked as the community service medical officer at Christ the King Hospital in Ixopo, his hometown, and in 2011 joined the training programme for general surgeons at UKZN. After two years, he got a training post in Urology at UKZN.

‘This was very exciting since urology had always been my true passion.’

He also trained at the Urology Department of Sefako Makgatho University, where he qualified as a Urologist in 2019. In 2021 he obtained his Master of Medicine degree in Urology.

‘I enjoy making a positive difference in patients’ lives. Seeing them recover makes me happy and gives me a feeling of accomplishment,’ Dr Mkhize says, adding that he aims to give hope to his patient.

‘Many men are too ashamed to seek help for sexual health problems. I’m here to say to them: there is hope, no need to hide in the darkness, I can help!

‘I encourage men to be proactive regarding their prostate cancer screening and sexual health problems. The stigma and shame attached to their problems should be a thing of the past,’ he says. ‘I look forward to being of service to the residents of the Northern KZN region and, in particular, the Richards Bay and surrounding areas.’
